It's Forever Song List

  1. It's Forever
    (1991) 1:55

Slow and sad, this was inspired by an old Southern ballad progression. I also played it at my cousin's wedding on the Chesapeake Bay. It seemed like the right choice for the title of the CD, because music can be so timeless.

  2. Home
    (1991) 4:16

I have a physical home, but for some reason, I keep searching for a more permanent destination... I wrote this shortly after coming to California, during a period when I had left the home I was used to and was trying to find a new one. It took a long time!

  3. Lost
    (1997) 3:19

This song is about being extremely introverted and shy, but wishing to be otherwise. The person the song is about dreams about breaking free from his self-created prison and stealing away under the moonlight.

  4. The Lagoon
    (1998) 3:36

A musical journey, light-hearted and upbeat. There is a quiet section in the middle that always makes me think of finding a hidden lagoon and just sitting quietly nearby for a while before taking off again.

  5. Hawaii
    (1985) 1:35

Picture a perfect, 80-degree day in Kona, on a lanai about ten stories up, with a gorgeous view of waves crashing against the rocks. Written during my first trip to Hawaii during high school. I love how the guitars in the background of the last chorus sound like violins.

  6. Soulmates
    (1999) 3:53

Everyone has one, don't they? But how can you be sure which is the right one? The chimes are the only non-guitar sound on the album (except for the ocean on Uluatu).

  7. Stay
    (1999) 3:54

I wrote this about a friend's dad who was in and out of the hospital with cancer at the time. He died in early 2000. Actually, I guess it was more of an expression of how badly she didn't want to lose him.

  8. Sadness #1
    (1992) 1:42

This came out right after I moved into San Francisco with two roommates. It wasn't really about any particular sad event or feeling, it just always sounded kind of sad to me.

  9. Look At Me
    (1988) 5:06

My first girlfriend inspired this back in college. First heartbreak, too.

  10. The Good Life
    (1995) 3:50

This song sums up how I felt when I came to California alone from Ohio. I was so moved by the beauty of the sun, the sea, and the city, but I was also so lonely. I thought a lot about the friends I had left behind as I wrote this.

  11. Sadness #2
    (1999) 2:55

Unlike Sadness #1, this one was actually about real sadness - in fact, about depression. Writing this song literally brought me out of it. I'm so glad something made me reach for my guitar that day.

  12. Uluatu
    (????) 5:42

Written by a buddy in Indonesia. I first heard him play it at Myrtle Beach, S.C. in 1993 by the ocean in the middle of the night. It stuck in my head for weeks!
